NEBOSH National General Certificate
This is a Gold Standard NEBOSH course.
This qualification has been designed to reflect the needs of today’s employer giving learners everything they need to know and do to make their workplace healthier and safer.
NEBOSH National General Certificate is relevant to every workplace and has a focus on the things that matter, covering:
- How to effectively manage health and safety.
- How to identify and control common workplace hazards.
- How to measure if you’ve been successful.
- The UK’s key legal requirements.
Holding the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety will help you to:

- Confidently carry out risk assessments.
- Develop and implement a detailed action plan.
- Manage and minimise workplace risks.

Important note: the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (October 2018 specifications) is a standalone qualification. The units from other NEBOSH qualifications cannot be used against any part of this qualification.
There are no entry requirements for this qualification, however it is important that learners have a suitable standard of English language in order to understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus. NEBOSH recommends that learners undertaking this qualification should reach a minimum standard of English equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.0 or higher in IELTS tests.

Important note: the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (October 2018 specifications) is a standalone qualification. This means that you will not be able to use units from other NEBOSH qualifications against any part of this qualification.

This modern qualification focuses on key skills that means you can instantly apply the knowledge you gain and add value to your organisation.
An open book examination (OBE) to assess what you know and how you can apply your knowledge (24-hour window in which to complete the OBE on examination day).
A practical risk assessment to assess what you can do (Undertaken in your own workplace – recommended at least 3 hours to complete).
Both assessments are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH.

1. Why we should manage workplace health and safety.
2. How health and safety management systems work.
3. Managing risk – understanding people and processes.
4. Health and safety monitoring and measuring.
The above are tested by an open book examination (OBE).
National General Certificate 2
5. Physical and psychological health.
6. Musculoskeletal health.
7. Chemical and biological agents.
8. General workplace issues.
9. Work equipment.
10. Fire.
11. Electricity.
The above are tested by practical risk assessment.
