Profile

What first motivated you to become a trustee of WYMS?
I was motivated by a strong belief in the value of lifelong learning and technical skills development within British manufacturing.

Having started my own career through hands-on engineering, I understand how critical training and professional development are in building both capability and confidence. WYMS plays a vital role in strengthening our regional manufacturing base by providing people with the knowledge and qualifications they need to succeed.

What do you feel makes WYMS an important organisation to support?
WYMS provides an essential bridge between industry, education, and professional accreditation. It ensures that manufacturers of all sizes - particularly SMEs - have access to high-quality, affordable, and relevant training. In doing so, it safeguards skills, improves productivity, and helps secure the long-term future of manufacturing across West Yorkshire and beyond.

How does your professional background help you contribute to the charity’s goals?
As Managing Director of a long-established UK machine tool manufacturer, I bring insight into the challenges and opportunities facing modern engineering businesses -from skills shortages and digital transformation to export growth and sustainability. This perspective helps WYMS align its training offer with real industry needs, ensuring it continues to deliver practical, high-value outcomes for learners and employers alike.

What do you find most rewarding about being a trustee?
Seeing the tangible impact that WYMS has on people's careers and the local economy is incredibly rewarding. Whether it's apprentices gaining their first qualifications or experienced engineers upskilling for new technologies, every success story reinforces the importance of what the organisation does. Being part of that positive change is deeply satisfying.
